“Blocos: From the Bay to Bahia”
Description: This workshop provides a hands-on experience in Loco Bloco’s multicultural, community-based drumming. Facilitators and students will explore how the Afro-Brazilian concept of “Blocos” inspires Loco Bloco’s music and programs. Students will discuss and formulate their own view of the value and impact of the arts on cultural health and resilience.
Length: 1.5-2 hours
Level: 6th-8th grade, High-school & college-aged youth
“Healthy Habits , Daring Dancers : Change starts with you!”
Description: This is a dance workshop that utilizes movement as a way to take positive risks and develop healthy personal habits. Through a series of activities that explores healthy vs. unhealthy habits, participants will experience how physical activities and creative outlets, like dance, can promote the healthy habits they wish to see in their lives. Movement games and dance activities are designed for students to practice stepping beyond their comfort zone and build confidence. By the end of the workshop, each student will share a goal with the group to create a healthy habit or to change an unhealthy one.
Length: 1-1.5 hours
Level: 4th/5th grade, 6th-8th grade, High-school students
“¡Que Viva Loco Bloco!”
Description: This is an introductory workshop to Loco Bloco’s arts education curriculum based in youth development, community building and social justice practices. Students will test and experience their abilities and knowledge in multicultural drumming, dance and community-based performance art. Students will learn the history of San Francisco Carnaval, Loco Bloco and leave knowledgeable and motivated to get involved in Loco Bloco or other youth development programs.
Length: 1-2 hours
